Report from Down Under: White Sharks were Missing

Large female white shark photographed in May 2015 during the late fall of the Southern hemisphere. It was to be a historic gathering of White shark conservationists and eco-tour operators from the world's shark hotspots to dive with Rodney Fox Shark Divers in the Neptune Islands. Friends gathered in Port Lincoln from South Africa, Canada, Reunion Island, New Zealand and the USA to make the 40 mile journey to the area where white sharks traditionally aggregate at this time yea

Wild Cape Cod Notebook: At the Equinox

The languid and steamy summer that we enjoyed on Cape Cod has transformed into cooler autumn weather pattern with ever more easterly winds and slowly cooling water temperatures. Sea ducks have begun their return to their winter feeding grounds here from the Arctic and in the white shark world larger and more mature fish have moved into the area in strong numbers eager to sample a seal meal. Throughout the summer whale watchers were treated to spectacular surface behavior from

Wild Cape Cod Notebook: Summer - Monomoy National Wildlife Refuge and the Atlantic White Shark Conse

Summer is a siren that woos us on Cape Cod each year here into a state of contentment with warm breezes and sunny days and spectacular natural history in our maritime environment. Summer 2016 has been no exception though it seems to be passing at an ever accelerating rate as we age. As in the previous two years we have been engaged in supporting the white shark research ongoing in outer Cape Cod waters conducted by Dr. Greg Skomal and John Chisholm with the dedicated support

    Wild Cape Cod Notebook

The last six weeks of summer have been a blur of intense activity on the Outer Cape Cod area. Emotional highs and lows and the awe of natural history in action have provided opportunities to witness some unique beauty here. Thought I would leave you a few impressions of a Cape Cod summer in the field as I now take a two week break to travel west. Most of our time in the field here as been in support of the white shark population study being directed by Dr. Greg Skomal, pictur

Close Encounters of the Shark Kind II

Heartfelt thanks to the Nickerson Art Gallery in Chatham, to all those who turned out for our reception last night and to those of you who visited our show during the past Shark Week! Very pleased to say that most of the images are going to great homes around the country spreading some shark love. For those who could not make it to Chatham, here is the line up of images including two limited edition posters that are being exhibited. The show closes today. #CapeCod #chatham #c

Close Encounters of the Shark Kind: An exhibit of original photographs

With Discovery Channel's Shark Week fast approaching, the adrenaline in this household is starting to increase with anticipation as it has every year at this time in recent memory. And now imagine our thrill at having the honor to be a (small) part of this year's lead show for the Shark Week line up, titled Shark Trek featuring our very own Dr. Greg Skomal and his important shark research being conducted right in outer Cape Cod waters. In honor of the weeks' coming events we

    African Odyssey Unfolds

We= just wrapped up our field work on Cape Cod working with the Massachusetts White Shark Team as the cold winds of winter start to blow and the leaves are falling. Our boats are now stored for the North American winter. Just in time to launch into our next wild adventure which will take us back to Africa for the 7th time since 2009. And believe it or not, we are barely past scratching the surface in exploring this amazing continent. Our focus once again is on wild life and w

Wild Cape Cod Notebook: Chasing the Last Dragons

A large male tagged earlier in the season is called Chex (nicknamed Darth Vader by the DMF Team). He is riddled with battle scars indicating that he is likely the dominant male white shark in the Chatham/Orleans habitat this summer season. The tag is visible in this image behind the dorsal fin. I read a recent article in National Geographic Traveler about cage diving with white sharks in the Neptune Islands in South Australia. Local eco-tour operator Andrew Fox describes the

Hard to believe that the dog days of August have come and gone here on Cape Cod and we are welcoming that wonderful time of year known around here as "Septober - Sixty-one Days of Heaven". As many of you who follow this blog are aware our summer has been dominated by the support we are providing to the Massachusetts Shark Research Program led by Dr. Greg Skomal and John Chisholm of the Department of Marine Fisheries here. That said we did manage a visit into the Monomoy Natio

    Wild Cape Cod Notebook: Summer

The summer is now more than half over and the various activities in the wild world here on Cape Cod have been both numerous and exciting to witness. As readers of this blog are aware, we have been supporting the White Shark Population Study field work under the direction of Dr. Greg Skomal through our involvement with the Atlantic White Shark Conservancy since the study initiated in June. This has us out on the waters of the outer Cape two to three times a week on the Aleutia

Wild Cape Cod Notebook: White Shark Research

Summer has now commenced in full swing here on Cape Cod and many summer visitors have arrived to enjoy all that a warm and sunny Cape Cod has to offer. Our attention has turned to supporting a research project that is being conducted in Cape Cod waters and when completed will answer the question most people ask about Atlantic white sharks. How many are out there? This work is being funded by donations of time equipment and $ from the Atlantic White Shark Conservancy in cooper

    Report from the Pacific

Many of you will have seen our report from Guadeloupe Island and our experiences in crystal clear water observing white sharks of the Pacific. In planning the trip we (err I) realized that the dates of the trip would include the date of a certain birthday milestone for Pam. Finally had a chance to review the video footage from the trip and now offer the attached clip which will give you just a little bit of the feel of what diving with massive white sharks is like. Wild Cape Cod Notebook: Autumn

The beauty of this time of year on Cape Cod is exemplified by the diversity of observations that one can have in a short period of time given migration and weather patterns of the season. The following sightings all occurred within the past week in the mid Cape region and waters. The red tailed hawk below was astounding in its concentration as it lifted off from its perch and kept focus while generating lift in the most beautiful way. The shorebird southerly migration is slow

    Report from the Pacific

Our journey to Guadeloupe Island was on track as we boarded the 120 ft dive live aboard, Nautilus Explorer in Ensenada, Mexico at about 10 PM and set out for the 180 mile journey southwest. Weather for travel was not ideal as a Tropical Storm was pounding Baja California about a 100 miles to the south of our position and sent large ocean swells in our direction. This caused uncomfortable rolling conditions as we stowed our gear, battened down anything that was not tied down a

    Expedition Cape Cod Concludes

If you have followed this page you are aware that M/V Ocearch has been in Cape Cod waters for the past month supporting a consortium of shark researchers in their quest to study the mysterious Atlantic white shark. The team was strong and had able leadership spending literally hundreds of hours on the water, sometimes in very challenging conditions, looking for these elusive visitors. The team reported seeing about 20 different white sharks from their platform but were succes

False Bay: A Lesson in Natural History

Have been back barely a few days from South Africa and still reeling from the energy and excitement of the time in the Western Cape observing and photographing earth's most amazing predator - the White Sharks of Seal Island in False Bay. Those of you who are "Shark Week" fans are no strangers to the home of "Air Jaws", as famous in most households around the world as Keiko the orca of "Free Willy" fame. "Air Jaws" is a handle for the white sharks that in the southern ocean wi
